CTU have been in negotiations since November, but talks have heated up lately drawing closer to the strike deadline. After an all-day negotiating session on Sunday, they have come together on some key issues:
1. The cost of health benefits
2. The make-up of teacher evaluation
3. Job security
The two sides have come together on compensation, but with serious concerns from the union on the other key issues.
This strike is being watched throughout the country because of the attacks on unions and collective bargaining. These attacks on private and public sectors workers have brought both sides closer together in an effort to maintain life as they know it.
As the teaches was instructed to report to their schools and pick up their picket signs, some union and school board officials will be at the bargaining tables. The last strike in Chicago was in 1987, and it lasted for 19 days. Stay tuned!
